End of Dispensation From Sunday Mass Obligation
In March as communities responded to the growing coronavirus outbreak, the bishops of Wisconsin’s five Roman Catholic dioceses granted a dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. As the outbreak grew all dioceses suspended the public celebration of Mass.
In recent months, dioceses and parishes throughout the state have been able to resume public worship by adhering to strict safety standards. Throughout this time, the faithful have not been required to attend Mass on Sundays.
With measures in place to promote and preserve the safety of those attending Mass, the bishops of Wisconsin have announced plans to end the dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation. In the Diocese of Madison, the dispensation is revoked beginning next Sunday, September 26, 2020.
Recognizing that it is not prudent to expect everyone to return to Sunday Mass, Bishop Hying has dispensed the following from the Sunday Mass Obligation:
· Those for whom, in their own prudent and prayerful judgment, attending Mass would pose greater than normal risk, either to themselves , to their families and others with whom they have contact, or to those attending Mass, whether the source of additional risk is the age, health, possible recent exposure, difficulty in observing social distancing guides and other hygienic measures, gauged in proportion to the gravity of the obligation in question.
· Those who attempt to attend Mass but, due to the limitations on church capacity imposed by ecclesiastical or civil authority, are either unable to enter the church or else upon arrival voluntarily abstain from doing so in order that others may attend, even if it would be possible to attend another Mass without extreme difficulty.
In short, if you believe that because of your own health situation or the health situation of those with whom you live or associate, it is a risk for you to attend Mass because of exposure to the coronavirus, you are currently dispensed from the Sunday Mass obligation.
Should you have any questions, especially about your own situation, please contact Fr. Savio.
